St Paul Lizonne

St Paul Lizonne is a pretty hill village in the northern region of the Dordogne. It has a Mairie and a twelfth century Romanesque church, along with a small family run hotel and two restaurants.

The nearest shopping village is St Severin, 3 kilometres away, where you can obtain everything you normally need (Butcher, Baker, Chemist, Newsagent and small local supermarket)

Riberac, 11 kilometres away, is a delightful market town with large supermarkets, specialist shops and an excellent street market every Friday.

Activities

In the surrounding area there are a good range of leisure activities. Horse riding, fishing and canoeing are all available locally. There is a 9 hole golf course nearby with a bar and restaurant.

There are two river beaches on the Dronne at Aubeterre and St Aulaye and a day trip to the beach at Royen, on the Atlantic coast, is within 90 minutes drive.

There is much to see and do within the region and many historic chateaux to visit.

Day Trips

Aubeterre is a beautiful, small town perched on the top of a hill overlooking the river Dronne. It has narrow winding streets, a Monolithic Church and a picturesque main square surrounded by cafes and restaurants.
Bergerac, set on the banks of the Dordogne, is a good centre for exploring the southwest of the region, especially the castles at Monpazier and Monflanquin.
Brantome, the ‘little Venice of Perigord’ is a pretty market town with an ancient abbey. Canoe, walk or cycle along the quiet banks of the Dronne.
Les Eyzies. Site of the most famous prehistoric cave paintings. Very busy in the summer but there are many other smaller sites around which are less crowded.
Montignac. An attractive town and centre for exploring the Lascaux caves and grottoes.
Perigeux, is a lively and interesting city and capital of the area. It is notable for its Cathedral and Roman remains in the old town.
Rocamadour. Very attractive but touristy staging post on the Santiago di Compostella trail built into the rock face.
Futuroscope near Poitiers is two hours drive from the house
Bourdeilles has a medieval fortress and renaissance palace
Bordeaux is only 90 minutes drive, through the vineyards of St Emilion

Food

There are plenty of good restaurants in the local area. This part of France is famous for its gastronomy (foie gras, confit de canard, truffles and pates). Restaurants are very reasonably priced and there aremany nearby to try. The three restaurants in the village are only a short walk from the house. An up to date list of all the best restaurants, many of them ‘off the beaten track’ will be in the house when you arrive.
